RELEASE~: Cardcaptor Sakura

Hey all. With Clear Card currently flooding my TL on Twitter, I decided to join in with a throwback.

Manga origin. 70eps, pretty long, but feels great. I will be covering the anime, the movies will be in the next 2 posts in the coming days.

Storyline is a series of episodic events which acts as buildups and will eventually hit a climax. The pacing can be rather slow for each ep, but the story doesn’t have to be fast, so that they can pay more attention to detail. They stretched the source material massively, adding original content and delaying key manga scenes. But they did the job nicely. Filler content doesn’t throw the show offpace but managed to keep the quality consistent. Plot twists is pretty minimal, but the fillers made the show pretty unpredictable. The episodic nature of the show did not make the show any bad, but its like gaining experience before fighting the final boss. The episodic nature didn’t sacrifice the depth of the storyline. Climax brings a lot of entertainment, quite a bit of surprise too. The ending was nice, but with 2 movies still waiting, I think it’s insignificant. Overall, a great shoujo demographic show which is willing to push boundaries.

Watching this show as a child made me think that this is a kids show, but it isn’t. The english dub heavily edited lines to downplay or trying to remove Yukito and Toyas’ romance. They even went on and changed character names, putting in a new musical score and even dubbing the OP and ED. As a kid, I liked it because I thought it was the source material, but once I realized I was “deceived”, I hated dubs from then on. So watching it again in Japanese totally blew my mind, it has so much depth compared to the dub, which made me cherish the show even more.

Animations by Madhouse. I watched the recently released bluray version. It doesn’t upscale the 1998 version, but its a legit 1080p video. Even though its 4:3, it still looks great. Character designs were great. Colors were pretty nicely done. Keyframes were surprisingly smooth for cel animation techniques. I love it.

Music is another plus. BGMs were nice, OPs and EDs were classics.

Cast list is great. Tange Sakura, Iwao Junko, Hisakawa Aya, Kumai Motoko, Yuzuki Ryoka, Ito Miki, Sasaki Nozomu, Seki Tomokazu, Minaguchi Yuko, Yukana, Mitsuishi Kotono, Kawakami Tomoko, Konishi Katsuyuki, Ogata Megumi. What a list, one of the greatest list for me so far.

Score:

Story: 9/10

Art: 8.5/10

Music: 8.5/10

VAs: 9/10

A show I liked in my childhood, but was deceived by the West. But even after watching it in it’s full glory, I love it to bits.

Which is why I’m watching Clear Card.

  1. I’m a fan of both the original dub (it’s been redubbed since) and the sub—the latter for obvious reasons but the earlier, too, because it became a more western series that was fun in its own right!
