Rant: Why people should stop saying “XXX is the best XXX of all time.”

nyqbdga

This thing has been in my mind for quite awhile, now that I started blogging, it gotten worse, looks like I have to get this off my chest.

People should honestly, sincerely and definitely stop saying: “XXX is the best XXX of all time”, be it artists, musics, animes or anime studios, etc etc.

Why?

Its obvious, something or someone will eventually supercede that specific thing or person that you called the best. It’s called “Hype” for a reason. Hype dies down fast, it has been proven for decades.

I have a lot of examples, but I will just do a few.

Firstly, “Shelter”. I admit, the music video is good, but the song is only average. I don’t get how a “music video” can become something good enough to say its the best song/anime music video of all time. Like seriously, the reason why this thing became legit is because of A-1 and they managing to add a storyline into the music video, something pretty meaningful. I wonder how A-1 can spend so much effort, time and money into telling such a good story for a MUSIC VIDEO and butchering other legit works instead. It is surprising to see A-1 do such a music video for just a song that hardly means anything, it just shows how hypocritic A-1 can actually be.

Secondly, Kimi no Na Wa. Its undeniably a great movie, but it still cannot be called the best movie of all time. Why? Flaws, everything has flaws, including this movie. After watching it, I called it incredible piece of work, but after Koe no Katachi happened, Kimi no Na Wa gets a drop in ranking for me. In my recent posts for Koe no Katachi, I listed the main reason why its better than Kimi no Na Wa. First, KNK proved that you can still tell an incredible tale without fanservice. Secondly, Kimi no Na Wa can be pretty complicated for people to understand, while KNK was simple, straight to the point and the ride was a lot sweeter. People who watched Kimi no Na Wa can get lost mid story. It’s because Koe no Katachi didn’t get enough exposure like Kimi no Na Wa, which is why Kimi no Na Wa grabbed the international animation awards. Koe no Katachi was way realistic too, it reflects on how society works when there is a deaf person in a clique. Kimi no Na Wa’s romance can be shallow at times, but their ending was sweeter than Koe no Katachi, both manga and movie because cliffhangers.

Thirdly, Ano Hana and Clannad. Both are equally incredible, how the story manages to stir our emotions is just amazing. Why they cannot be called the best? The hype has died down. It’s still great even watching them dozens of times, but there are people who will hate it, people who will not understand how emotion works. There are still pretty much no other show that will exceed their abilities in emotion manipulation, but sooner or later, someone or some other show in future will be able to, we just need to wait.

Forth, Sukasuka OST. I don’t get it. Just 1 ep and you called it the best OST of all time? Seriously people, how shallow can you be? Have you forgotten Kajiura Yuki, Sawano Hiroyuki? Like really, 1 ep and you called it best OST? IMO, even Qualidea Code OST is way better than Sukasuka’s. Hype died down pretty quickly because of how shitty the show became after 3 eps.

So, under what circumstances then we can call someone or something the best? The impossible time where EVERYONE loves the specific thing, not a single hater.

Has anyone realized that I never called anything or anyone the best XXX of all time? If not, then you are not reading my posts hard enough.

TL;DR Stop calling that thing the best, hype will die down and something will supercede it sooner or later.

This is just a rant from my inner dark soul, don’t treat it too seriously, it just shows how salty you are if you put something negative in my comment section.

Ok, this wraps up the rant. I rarely rant because I don’t really have much dissatisfaction, but this is exceptional. It’s been stirring for years, so I decided to write it out. Don’t expect another rant soon, because I ran out of ideas already.

Till next time.

  1. I think this criticism is irrational, to be honest. I feel like you’re ranting because other people don’t exactly share your same opinion and that’s fine. That’s normal, even. Because that’s kind of what comes with being a critic: We often compare and contrast and go in-depth as to why we prefer this anime over the other.

Regardless, you seem to not bring up any good arguments as to why you value certain shows over the others besides just throwing out ideas. For example: You say Kimi no Na Wa is complicated but you don’t really give any sort of argument as to why it is, you just SAY it is.You’re not giving me anything concrete to relate with to your opinion.

Oh and I know this is supposed to just be a “rant” but you cannot expect people to NOT criticize your opinion. It’s the way the internet works, if you apply your opinion on a subjective topic, people are gonna criticize, discuss and understand. If you don’t want to discuss or understand the views of others, you probably shouldn’t criticize to begin with.

Like, saying “This is just a rant from my inner dark soul, don’t treat it too seriously, it just shows how salty you are if you put something negative in my comment section.” is such a passive aggressive way of saying you don’t want any harsh criticisms but that’s not how it works…

I’m just trying to be as sincere with you as possible, I think where this argument is coming from is fairly baseless. Because while I sort of understand that it can be a little irritating when someone says something is “the best”: it’s pretty easy to understand, as humans, why they think it is at least in the current time. It’s just because they love the show out of the goodness of their own heart. And while, that may not be criticism enough for you OR me, that’s just what happens when you’re so passionate about a series even if it WILL die down after a week or 2. That’s what happens when you’re part of a community predominantly around the age bracket of 13-19. That’s not to say you personally CANNOT criticize their opinions but how they take it is up to them and I think this post is evident enough that you’re aware they may take your criticisms to heart and just start unconstructively criticizing YOU for simply… Disagreeing with them. but then that just means they clearly aren’t mature to have a proper discussion, so, honestly there’s no reason to worry about it. Letting them fangirl over a specific series is kind of what our community takes pride in, even me who is typically very controlled in how I criticize specific series will sometimes use hyperbole to describe them. Phrases such as “x is the BEST ANIME OF ALL TIME” will get thrown around with ease simply because that’s how enthusiastic we are about, not just that specific anime, but anime in general.

Similarly to how you describe that people shouldn’t take this post seriously, it’s equally evident that you shouldn’t take that kind of hyperbolic opinion so seriously.

  2. There’s certain situations where you can call someone or something the best of all time. A good example would be sports, people can look at players stats, their mechanics, etc. Which is why people can say things like Peyton Manning is the greatest QB of all time or that Kobe Bryant is the greatest Laker of all time. Another instance where you can say someone or something is the best is where there’s a definitive objective answer to what’s considered good and how you measure it. Hip Hop is probably the best example since it’s agreed that lyrics, flow, and wordplay are the most important aspects of the music. It’s also easy to tell what are good verses, flows, and when an artist has great wordplay that’s one of the reasons why Eminem is called the greatest rapper of all time even though many people don’t like his music or style its, it’s also the same reason why guys like Lil Pump, Lil Yachty, and Lil Uzi Very are considered to be bad rappers even though their fanbase is huge.
