Derailing the future: Orange

Hey all.

Manga origin, 5 volumes in 3 years. Anime aired for 13 eps, movie ran for 63mins. The live-action movie ran for 139mins. This is my first show where it’s demographic is both shoujo and seinen.

Anime

Setting and concept is pretty overused by now, but the story and execution was not. The show became darker than I expected making me enter a state of depression for about a month. Pacing was a bit fast, quite rushed for 13eps. Character development is pretty low surprisingly, judging from the dark past that the main hero had. Plot twists were a hit and miss.  Climax was pretty decent. Ending was rather nicely wrapped.

The movie comes in as an alternative perspective from the anime. The story feels pretty much a repeat as the other guy’s perspective isn’t exactly a lot to account for, so it felt more like a recap movie. There isn’t exactly a climax, but the ending felt more complete than the anime. 63mins movie, but actual content is like under 20mins. Overall, it’s nice, comedy is a weak point because of how serious the show is, but is was still nice.

Animations done by TMS. The quality is decent, character design can take awhile for people to get used to, but it gives off more of a shoujo vibe. Colors were decent.

Music is ok. I cannot feel the OP and ED. BGMs were nice.

Cast list is pretty nice. Hanazawa Kana, Yamashita Seiichiro, Furukawa Makoto, Kinugawa Rika, Okitsu Kazuyuki, Takamori Natsumi, Sakura Ayane, Yamaguchi Kyouko, Noto Mamiko, Asano Masumi, Inoue Kikuko. It’s pretty nice, the dialogue felt very laidback and sometimes serious, it felt like Tsuki ga Kirei.

Live-action

The live-action movie was decent. Storyline wise, as usual from all live-action films, they are different from the manga and anime. The story felt a lot less darker than the anime, but it has more development. Pacing a little slower, even slower than the anime. They timed 139mins pretty nicely. Climax is pretty low on this one. Ending was decent, but doesn’t feel as complete as the anime movie. Overall, rankings will be anime, anime movie then live-action. This story is worthy of making a live-action, but they didn’t really did a good job.

Music is ok. BGMs were fine.

The cast were great. Their portrayals were pretty nicely done. But weirdly, it feels awkward for me.

Recommended. If you want less depressing, go live-action. If you want to destroy yourself, go anime.

  2. I have watched the Animeseries, but not the live action movie. I agree about the anime being pretty dark, but did like the ending that at least ended things on a pretty positive note (I don’t think I could have handled a dark outcome/ending for that one). As for the live action movie, glad to read that it at least seems to do justice to the anime. I will try and see if I can track this one down somewhere. Thanks for yet another great post 😊
