Wasted Potential: Guilty Crown

Hello, I’m posting this slightly earlier because I have to work the next day, so… yeah…

Original series, anime ran for 22 eps with a 15min prequel OVA. I dropped this show for 2 times before, but eventually finished it.

The story had great potential, the execution is pretty wasted. The story started off at a pretty slow pace, but it brought no surprises. The pace suddenly picks up at the 2nd half and things goes out of proportion and starting to feel incredibly far-fetched. The character development is so little that it felt like its a bedtime story. Shu’s character is incredibly stupid and I feel like punching him in the face, even when he starts to get on his own two feet, he became an even bigger asshole. Inori is incredibly bland and flatline boring, all she’s here for is just being Shu’s weapon and a singer. The story goes very far-fetched that I got lost in the show and I even checked if I’m still watching the same show. Ending was pretty deep, at least making the 22 eps felt a bit worthwhile, but a bit inconclusive. Overall, I don’t like the show, but I don’t really hate the show? Its really confusing, I dunno how to feel the show.

OVA is a prequel of the main series, reliving the events of Lost Christmas, the day where the virus erupted causing incredible amount of deaths. Its pretty shallow if you ask me, I expected a lot more tragedy, but its still quite an OK job, for an OVA, that only lasts for 15mins.

Animations by Production I.G. For a 2011-2012 show, the animations is incredible. Production I.G never disappoints with their art quality. Colors are pretty vivid and the lines are sharp. Their keyframes are pretty smooth too. Combat scenes are amazing.

Music is excellent too. OPs and EDs were fantastic. BGMs by Sawano Hiroyuki, its pretty much perfect.

VAs is a pretty decent list. Kaji Yuki, Kayano Ai, Nakamura Yuichi, Hanazawa Kana,  Taketatsu Ayana, Koyasu Takehito, Okamoto Nobuhiko, Mizushima Takehiro, Sakaguchi Daisuke, Shimamura Yu, Kotobuki Minako, Endo Aya, Inoue Kazuhiko, Uchiyama Koki, Canna Nobutoshi, Nishigaki Yuka, Tsuda Minami, Seki Toshihiko, Sakurai Takehiro, Asumi Kana, Takagaki Ayahi, Kobayashi Yuu. For some reason, Kayano Ai’s monotone voice portrayal of Inori keeps turning me off, I dropped the show two times because of this. I really hate her voice in this show. Other than that, everyone were fantastic.

Score:

Story: 7.5/10

Art: 9/10

Music: 9/10

VAs: 8.5/10

Recommended? Yeah, if you like Egoist and also eye-candy animations, story-wise… its only decent.

More posts on Monday.

  1. Same with poster leaf here. Started and dropped it several times, never could finish it – however I did the same with grimgar and managed to finish that, so you never know, might give it another shot. Agree with you. Art and OST are just fantastic, the tag line seems to draw me in as well.

  2. All style, no substance. I wanted to like this show but yeah the story just wasn’t doing it for me by the second half. Like you said, it’s very nice to look at the the music is amazing, if only the story was better though.

  3. I’ve dropped this several times and still can’t finish it. Shu NEEDS a slap in the face rofl. It’s hard to decide exactly how to feel about this show like you said, because it has really good production and the ost is fantastic but….Shu….
