The Mirror Plays: Battle Girl High School

HEY HEY HEYYYYY! I don’t just play PC games, I play mobile games too you know.

This is a hack and slash with rhythmic key hybrid game, for both iOS and Android. It’s a pure Japanese game so don’t expect any English stuff in this one. Of course, I played it in Japanese, I had no choice actually. The gameplay is pretty smooth, but sometimes the battle gets so intense that my phone will actually lags out a bit due to heavy graphical rendering. But it’s all right. Colors are pretty vivid and everything looked pretty razor sharp. 3D models look pretty much the same as their 2D counterparts which is rather hard to find in mobile games. I think a mid-end phone can play the game already. I played this on my Xperia Z1, then LG G4, then Note 3 and finally, and currently my Xperia Z5. All of them only had hiccups when the phone starts to get hot from the intensive gameplay, or when the graphics start to go wild. As for iPhones, I think iP 5 and above can play this game pretty nicely already. Tablets are not recommended, because it requires a lot of tapping and you will be raging hard when you keep missing due to the big screen. Even the interface don’t really recommend tablets. The game plays in portrait format.

The gameplay is pretty simple, just tap at the appropriate timing and your female character will slash monsters. When you reach the amount of combos, your girl will start to activate her skill, be it an reinforcement spell, or final blow or even both. The storyline when I first played was pretty short, but they expanded a lot now with tons of new girls, I got addicted within a few hours of playing. The storyline is actually pretty dramatic, I’m quite surprised.

Evolution system is pretty complex and sometimes rely on your own skills too. You get basic leveling maxes out at 50 with expansions up to lvl 70, you also have relationship ratings, get 4 hearts and evolve your girl to her max potential, it’s kinda nice. And also you can put up to 3 sub cards to reinforce your girls basic stats.

You get to choose their weapons, and weapons can get evolved too. Another complex round of evolution.

You get 3 girls max in a party, but you can switch them during the battle.

This game does have in-app purchases, but they are not really in-your-face kind and there are no ads. I’m playing so well with zero dollar spent, a massive plus point for this game.

Character designs are nice. I love them. They also announced an anime adaptation, I can’t wait for it.

Music is pretty bubbly and the sound effects feels good.

Voice cast is a pretty legit list. Suzaki Aya, Sakura Ayane, Amamiya Sora, Toyama Nao, Uesaka Sumire, Hayami Saori, Uchiyama Yumi, Nanjo Yoshino, Tamura Mutsumi, Kuno Misaki, Igarashi Hiromi, Kido Ibuki, Kato Emiri, Harada Hitomi, Uchida Maaya, Yuki Aoi, Hondo Kaede, Shimoji Shino, Hidaka Noriko, Fukuhara Ayaka, Ozawa Ari. It’s a damn nice list if you ask me. All of their voices are pretty random, I couldn’t guess a single one.

Best girl? Watagi Michelle (Mimi). Her Mumi is extremely adorable.

Score:

Story: 8/10

Gameplay: 8.5/10

Interface: 8/10

Graphics: 8/10

Music and sound: 8/10

VAs: 9/10

Highly recommended, even with that language barrier, the game is still easy to navigate, but sometimes you still have to guess what it says. The game is free but in-app purchase at your own risk, even though they don’t really force you.
