Hidden gem: FLCL

Good afternoon~ Finally finished one of my backlogs… Didnt take long, but it felt like forever for some reason.

Anime original but in an 6 ep OVA format. For some reason it felt just right, it felt like a movie splitted into 6 eps.

Storyline is really random and all over the place. It sometimes doesnt make any sense, but seemed pretty logical. The comedy is really nice, but for some reason I cant really catch the gags, I didnt really laugh, but its still entertaining. I was hoping for some romance to actually happen, and it happened, without answers or a proper ending. The ending leaved a lot of questions unanswered, a LOT of them, and even added more questions with that ending.

Animations done by Gainax and Production I.G, and its the key point of this show. Its extremely wonderful for a 2000 anime as the frames and quality is seriously comparable to current anime standards. I watched the Bluray ver but was a bit disappointed, as they only expanded the resolution without any redraws or even make the show 16:9, at least the show is crystal clear. The combat scenes are overly dramatic but with their fluid frames, it feels extremely pleasing. Character designs are all very pleasing too.

Music is seriously unique, it felt very lighthearted. Its rare to hear such acoustic toned BGMs in an anime. The ED is nice but not for my taste.

VAs list is seriously alien to me, the first time I never heard of more than half of the cast. But all of them did a splendid job, especially Mamimi.

Score:

Story: 7.5/10

Art: 8/10

Music: 7.5/10

VAs: 7/10

Personal preference whether you will enjoy the series ot not. I dont think I will recommend people to watch.

Production I.G just bought the FLCL rights from Gainax August last year, and MIGHT be planning on doing a remake. If its real, I think it will be better, but hopefully they make it a complete movie instead of an OVA.
