Good evening… Might be my last post for the month, before i go away for 3 weeks.
Originated from a manga, lasted for 6 years with 26 volumes. The anime spanned for 3 seasons of 12eps each with 4 OVAs. First OVA is a 2 minute intro, second one is after season 2, the 3rd one has 2 eps in it, the 4th OVA is after the 3rd then the 3rd season comes. It was a long but enjoyable and roller coaster ride.
Skipping the first OVA due to lack of material to write. The story for this one is one-of-a-kind, the way they pull off their gags is seriously out of this box, maybe because its my first time seeing such a 2D lover doing things that are literally a laughing stock in the real world. Seriously. He have to “conquer” girls to lure “demons” out of them, because he is under a contract and if he dont fulfill, he will be beheaded by a leash-like thing on his neck. At first i thought i can really predict it, but actually it knocks you off your guard with its twist and turns in its drama and comedy. The romance here is pretty a one-time thing, because its pretty episodic as it appears like as if its different girls different arc concept, since the girls forgets about the “conquest”, after they got “conquered”. The ending is was pretty good, because they made a lot of room for another season, which i watched immediately after that. 12eps might be short, but it felt pretty lengthy.
Its kinda continues with what S1 has been doing, and still a good job. Lesser girls where conquered this season due to its increased level of difficulty, but this means more drama, which kinda compensates it. The ending felt like they could have done more, but they skipped a lot until the OVA. But this season has a lot of fluctuation in feels and tends to lead to a roller coaster, laugh then feels, then laugh again, but in the end you can just laugh it off. This manages to make this season dont feel bland and keep staying fresh. 12eps maybe short, but it feels just right.
OVA 2 – 4girls and an idol
This one is like K-on, pretty much like a group of girls trying to make a band and they eventually did it. Comedy-wise was ok, not really fantastic.
OVA 3 – Tenri arc
This one spans to 2 eps. Its about the MC’s childhood friend, Tenri, and its this dramatically changes the direction the anime is going as they hunt Goddesses now, not demons, and also keeping the story fresh without it being bland. The comedy is pretty well done, and the romance is pretty decent. The ending was ok too, but it does leave a bit of room for a sequel.
OVA 4 – Magical Star Kanon 100%
This one is about one of the girl he conquered, Kanon, an idol. The storyline is pretty fanservicey but still brings a proper story. Comedy is decent.
Season 3 – Goddesses Arc
This is a continuation of what OVA 3 has done. The storyline for this is really good, the comedy levels are way above S1 and S2, and the roller coaster feeling has more depth now, and finally, they finally added real enemies into the mix, and also there is some actual combat now. He have to reconquer some of the girls to revive the goddesses, and to save the world. The feels for this is seriously heavy, especially the ending. This lead me to hate the MC for awhile for his way he rejects a girl, he seriously burnt the girl hard. But the feels come in when he realized he was sorry for what he said to her and he is in love with her now. But the season ended pretty abrupt without an outcome about him liking her.
I really love the series, a lot, the ending of the manga was pretty touching, as he finally stopped looking at 2D girls all the time and slowly realise the beauty of 3D girls and learn to appreciate them, and eventually confessed to one of the girls he conquered. The concept is pretty unique and they hit the spot for their gags, and sometimes may cause serious consequences with its comedic elements, and also there is wide variety of girls to love and you will find your waifu inside eventually, spanning from Tsunderes to Yanderes, you name it, they have it. Most of the time, the comedy actually comes from the level of logic that the MC had, its simply mindblowing sometimes, but also sometimes makes a lot of sense. Its really a pity they didnt animate the entire series, as there are a lot of girls popping out of nowhere and those who dont read the manga will most likely have no idea who are they and how he conquer them. But i think its gonna cost a lot to animate all 26 volumes worth of content, but if they manage to adapt well like they used to, then it shouldnt be a problem if they wanna strike it rich. But maybe they had budget constraints as they have to hire more VAs to voice the additional girls.
Artwork is all done by Manglobe, surprisingly, they invested a lot in this department too, the quality is shockingly good, its a lot better than how they animate Hayate. Colors are vivid, lines are sharp and the character design is pretty close to what the manga had with is already damn visually pleasing itself. But this made me kinda pissed as they can actually do the same thing with Hayate, they had the ability to. They in fact improved their standards as the season progresses and Goddesses had the highest quality as the combat scenes are well done, colors are even more vivid. Character design is damn cute for all of them and they managed to make dark hair colored girls stand out a lot, but they also include other hair color girls too, but the most distinctive are still the dark haired ones.
The music is another unique point, they used “heavenly” English lyrics OP, and the ED spans into a lot of types. The OST also expanded thanks to Kanon’s songs. BGMs are pretty well done and they somewhat boosts the comedic elements quite a bit.
The VAs is a long list, a very long one. Shimono Hiro, Kanae Ito, Hayami Saori, Nazuka Kaori, Taketatsu Ayana, Yuki Aoi, Toyama Nao, HanaKana, Koshimizu Ami, Asumi Kana, Toyosaki Aki, Iguchi Yuka, Akesaka Satomi, Takagaki Ayahi, Shimizu Ai, Kujira, Toyoguchi Megumi, Terashima Takuma, Tomatsu Haruka, Yuzuki Ryoka, Tanaka Atsuko, Nonaka Ai, Tange Sakura. Most of the popular VAs who voiced the Targets, like Taketatsu Ayana, Asumi Kana etc used very normal tone to voiced their roles, kinda gave me a shock as it sometimes lead to blandness but also gives off a unique feel at the same time as it might be their first time voicing like this. Megumi, Ami with their rough voice, not surprised but still impressed. Tomatsu Haruka voices another Yandere character again, i like. Kaori in her girly voice is pretty heartwarming, but then unsurprisingly, she also voiced a Tsun Tsun goddess. Otherwise, nothing much to talk about, because they all did their job pretty well.
Story: 7/10 (OVA1), 8/10 (S1), 8.5/10 (S2), 8/10 (OVA2), 8.5/10 (OVA3), 8/10 (OVA4), 9/10 (S3)
Art: 7-9/10 (it improves as the season progresses)
Music: 9/10 (S1, S2, OVA1, 2, 3, 4), 9.5/10 (S3)
VAs: 8.5/10 (S1, OVA1, 2, 3, 4), 9/10 (S2), 9.5/10 (S3)
Overall, its feels such a pity they didnt animate the additional girls from the manga and they skip quite a lot of content in between S2 and S3. Otherwise, it would have been perfect.
Highly recommended to both read the manga and watch the animes. All of them will never fail to entertain you or make your day.
