Similar but Different: Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru (edited)

Good evening~ Now part 2 of the comparison spree!

How are the similar?

  • Both are magical girl-themed with a very unique twist
  • Both are anime originals
  • Both of 5 girls as heroes/magical girls
  • Both are pretty much about saving the world
  • Both are 1cours of 12 eps.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Dropped this for like 5times before i decided to complete it.

The story for this one is pretty twisted. At first i was hoping for a nice bubbly magical girl series, but slowly, its was all a mindfuck. It slowly became very dark, and then twists and turns, conspiracy after another. 12eps was just right, it doesnt feel rushed, it doesnt feel empty, there is always action, mysteries, questions every ep to keep you entertained. The ending is a nice wrap-up, it gives us a proper conclusion, so it can stay as 1 season. In fact, i think another season might actually ruin the franchise. The feels in the show and also the ending are legitly heavy, it does bring a few tears to my eyes. The movies were pretty excessive tbh. The first 2 movies are just recaps with a teeny tiny bit of extras. As for the last movie, it raises a few eyebrows here and there, but that scene omg…

This is something you dont see everyday. This movie ended with also pretty heavy feels, the ending also made me miss Madoka a lot, might make me crave for a rewatch. Then we got another messed up furball alien with a personality you dont see everyday, such manners…

Art is done by Shaft, lucky the animations isnt that excessive as Nisekoi or Monogatari, its nice in its own way and the quality is pretty awesome. Combat scenes are about the same level of what i shown above. Love it.

Music is so catchy, ClariS for the OP and Kalafina for the ED… Such quality music. Another plus. OP for Movie 1 and 2 are also nice because ClariS. BGMs are all damn nice also, hands down.

VAs are a list of damn good veterans. Yuki Aoi, Saito Chiwa, KitaEri, Mizuhashi Kaori, Nonaka Ai, Kato Emiri, Goto Yuko, Shintani Ryoko, Asumi Kana.

Best gurl? none to be honest, all of them are too messed up for me to love.

Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru

This is the weaker one out of the pair. But when i watched this, it reminds me of Madoka all over again. The story here is less mindfuck, maybe because i watched Madoka, prepared for anything. Its also less dark, but it does have their own way to show their darkness. Watched the first 6 eps, and they finished their mission already, and i thought the next 6 will be all fun and games all slice of life, but then suddenly, enemies return and they have to fight again, and also learn about the truth of them being heroes. Conspiracies here and there starts to form. The ending had a bit of feels, but it wasnt heavy as it all ended happily after all that, but actually it tears of joy. It was wrapped pretty well, so well that it doesnt need another season at all, something that Madoka managed to do.

Art is done by Studio Gokumi, ok, this is mindblowing. As studio that makes this:

and this

can suddenly make this

is no small feat and i have to give it to them. Quality might be slightly better than Shaft but Shaft handles better with the combat scenes. But still Gokumi did their best and it is nice to see that.

Music is nice, OP was soothing, ED was touching, everything is nice. BGMs also did an excellent job

VAs are a mixture. Terui Haruka, Mimori Suzuko, Uchiyama Yumi, Kurosawa Tomoyo, Nagatsuma Juri, HanaKana, Hanamori Yumiri. All of them did their job well, but Suzuko might be slightly out of place. Its negligible so its fine.

Best gurl? All of them are pretty equal for me… All of them are lovable by their own way…

  1. YES MADOKA! I’ve never seen Yuuki Yuuna, but the art looks pretty so maybe I ought to try it sometime. You also compared it to PMMM, not that they’re absolutely similar, but of all the shows you picked that one . . . That makes me even more curious.
